6E SURVIVE! PBL Project
Each year 6East students at Wood Hill read Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. This is a strong example of a novel dealing with the year-long theme of "power of the individual." Hatchet is the story of thirteen-year-old Brian Robeson who survives 54 days in the wilderness after a plane crash, initially with only the aid of a hatchet.
After actively reading the story, students are placed into groups and each group is assigned a different country (see list below). The students will research their country using resources from The Hub and create a skit that included facts about the country and the items necessary for survival. Students will film in front of the green screen equipment in The Hub. Students will collaborate with peers and use critical thinking skills and creativity to create a movie using iMovie software on what is necessary for survival in Fiji, Canada, Sudan, Brazil or Iceland.
